Gilas Pilipinas to tap Javale McGee,Andray Blatche as naturalized player

GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes bared on Thursday that they are looking to tap either Javale McGee or fellow NBA player Andray Blatche to reinforce the national team in the Fiba World Cup in Spain in August.

Emerging from a meeting with the PBA board on Thursday, Reyes said two bills have been filed in Congress by Rep. Robbie Puno seeking the naturalization of McGee of the Denver Nuggets and Blatche of the Brooklyn Nets.

PBA shortens season to give way to Gilas prep for FIBA World Cup

GILAS Pilipinas’ buildup for this year's Fiba World Cup and Asian Games was given a boost after the PBA board of governors on Thursday unanimously approved to cut short the pro league's 39th season from a projected ending of August 15 to July 15.

Commissioner Chito Salud said under a board resolution agreed upon on Thursday during its meeting at the PBA office, the finals of the ongoing 39th season's final two conferences will be shortened from the original best-of-seven series to a best-of-five format.

Chot Reyes: 'Calvin Abueva's antics won't get him to Gilas PH'

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said Calvin Abueva will have to change his attitude if he has hopes of joining the national team for the FIBA World Basketball Cup.

In an interview with SPIN, Reyes said he wasn’t pleased to see Abueva’s “nganga” gesture during Alaska’s quarterfinals with Barangay Ginebra.

"Isipin mo naman, dala mo ang bandila ng Pilipinas tapos makikita ka dun nagkakain-subo ka habang naglalaro ka," said Reyes.

FIFA fines HongKong for fans' racist abuse vs Philippine Azkals

FIFA has fined the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) due to the alleged racist behavior of its fans in a friendly against the Philippines last year.

The governing body of world soccer ordered Hong Kong to pay 30,000 Swiss Francs or roughly P1.4 million.

FIFA also ordered HKFA to pay an additional 3,000 Francs or around P148,000 to cover the cost of the proceedings.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has dismissed Manny Pacquiao's recent victory over Brandon Rios as a win over “a blown-up lightweight” and referenced the eight-division titlewinner's tax issues as “68 million problems” that “he wants me to solve,” during a recent Q&A interview on FightHype.com.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 knockouts) characterized Pacquiao's quest to fight him as being asked to “throw an old, desperate dog a bone” and also re-iterated his assertion that he “will never do business” with Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, meaning that a megabout between the two would have to wait until 2015, when Arum's contract runs out, according to Pacquiao.

Gilas Pilipinas has set a lofty goal of finishing in the top 16 in the 2014 Fiba World Cup.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios Tuesday reiterated the marching orders given to national coach Chot Reyes: Make the second round of the world championship in Spain on Aug. 30 to Sept. 14.

“[SBP president] Mr. Manny Pangilinan told the team he doesn’t want them to become tourists in Spain,” said Barrios during the PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

In an earlier exclusive interview with the Inquirer, Pangilinan, the business tycoon who supports several sports associations, said the goal was to make it to the top 16, meaning Gilas needs to win two games during the preliminary round to advance.

Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao said it would be impossible for him to give in to Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s demand for him to leave Top Rank and seal a deal for their proposed superfight.

“Floyd has also been saying, he will only fight me if I separate from Top Rank and Bob Arum, imposible ‘yun kasi ang kontrata ko valid hanggang ngayong taon na ito pa. So how ? (That’s impossible because my contract is still valid this year)” Pacquiao said in an interview with Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea.

6-foot-8 Filipino-German player emerging as a star in US NCAA (VIDEO)

Except for a few hardcore basketball fans online, few Filipinos have heard the name Christian Standhardinger.
But if he keeps up his performance in the US NCAA, he may not be unknown for long in this basketball-crazy nation.

The 24-year-old Filipino-German forward has emerged as a star for University of Hawaii, the same school that produced Meralco Bolts wingman Jared Dillinger.

First Filipino in UFC fight feels 'big responsibility'

Galera said that just like any Filipino fight fan, he is thrilled about the prospect of seeing a Filipino MMA strutting his wares in the UFC.

“I think everyone is as excited as I am,” he said in UFC.com. “I think they can’t wait to see what we Filipinos can bring into the Octagon.”i

Galera, who was born in California but grew up in Baguio City, will be making his mark as the first Philippine-based fighter ever to fight in the UFC.

Will Gilas Pilipinas tweak roster?

Gilas coach Chot Reyes said recently he’s open to make changes in the national team lineup. He declined to suggest names to invite to the pool in deference to the PBA Board of Governors whose clearance is required before any player is drafted.

The difficulty that Reyes faces is the limited training period before Gilas leaves to compete at the FIBA World Cup in Spain on Aug. 30-Sept. 14. It will only be between two to four weeks as the national team awaits the finish of the PBA season.

Coach Chot laments PBA for lack of prep time for Gilas Pilipinas

National team coach Chot Reyes is hoping that the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the PBA teams will grant members of Gilas Pilipinas more practice time in preparation for the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games.

The FIBA world Cup is set to take place from August 30 to September 14, while the Asian Games will take center stage from September 19 to October 4.
